A CONVERSATION WITH MY DOCTOR’S OFFICE

ME

Hello, yes, I need an appointment to see the doctor.

RECEPTIONIST

What is the appointment regarding?

ME

Umm…anxiety.

RECEPTIONIST

First available appointment is August second.

ME

August second?! Man, that’s a long time. Christ, that’s three weeks away! I am really anxious; if anyone should cancel, can you call me?

RECEPTIONIST

No, we don’t call patients, that would take up too much of our time. If your symptoms should persist or worsen, please go to the after-hours clinic.

ME

After-hours clinic? They don’t know me; they can’t help. Man, I’m anxious all the time! I have generalized anxiety disorder. Seeing someone new…absolutely not, no way, not going to happen. Shit, I’m incapable of seeing someone new. OK, I’m really anxious; can I call you to see if someone cancels? I’m sure Mondays and Fridays are big for cancellations, right? Can I call you?

RECEPTIONIST

Yes, that’s encouraged. Call the office as much as you want.

ME

So stalking is encouraged?!

RECEPTIONIST

(laughing)

Yes, that’s right!

ME

OK, well, tomorrow is Friday, and I’m anxious…UMM…so I will call you tomorrow.

RECEPTIONIST

(still laughing)

OK, call as much as you want. In fact, you can leave a message.

ME

OK, but will you call me back?

RECEPTIONIST

Oh, yes. We’ll return your call.

ME

OK, I’ll talk to you tomorrow, because I have anxiety and really need to talk with someone. Man, three weeks is a lifetime away!

RECEPTIONIST

(laughing again)

OK, talk to you soon.

ME

(thinking to myself)

Anxiety is no laughing matter!

(to receptionist)

OK. (laughing) Talk to you tomorrow. You are my new BFF.

RECEPTIONIST

Man, you’re funny; you really are!

ME

Thanks; bye.

RECEPTIONIST

Bye.

  1. This is so true. Waiting to get an appointment to see a doctor can and does lead to anxiety. This made me laugh because of my own similar experiences.

  2. Sounds like me.I giggle a lot when I’m nervous. And Docs don’t know we are out there needing them. The nurses keep em hopping so they don’t find you. It sucks.
